Hi all newbie here, and 1st time on the site. I?m a 61yr old male 6?1, 240lbs and have gout, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. On July 21st 2011, I had blood work done and Uric Acid was 10.1. Currently, on Tekturna 300mg, Bystolic 5 mg and Lotrell 5/40 for my blood pressure which was about 110/65. Afterwards, went to the Doctor who put me on Uloric 40 mg and Crestor 10 mg for 30 days and then went on 9-2-11 for new blood work for Uric Acid and Liver work up.? As a result, the liver work up was good (all in proper range) Uric Acid down to 5.0 (Great from 10.1). The problem I had was over this Labor Day weekend (after the blood work) my left knee swelled up (could barely walk) and I had a Gout flare up on left ankle. As a result I took my-self off the Lotrell, Uloric and Crestor (was waiting for results of blood work and ?took Indomethacin 75mg twice a day for two days and monitored my BP which was consistently around 129×75 for the rest of the week until I got to my Doc on 9-9-11. My Doc thinks it could be Blood Pressure Meds which cause the knee and ankle to swell up and took me off all 3 BP meds and put me on Losartan 100 mg and advise me to monitor my BP for 2 weeks and if over 150/160 X 90 and above to call him so he could add another med for BP. Also, Doc told me resume taking Crestor 10mg and Uloric 40mg as prescribed. ?My question is could this flare up just be a reaction to blood pressure meds or gout attack even though uric acid at 5.0. Also, is Losartan a good BP med for gout sufferers and what is a good BP med to add to it if needed, current BP 145×91?

I have made up my mind and very determined to lose about 30-40 lbs and started drinking a lot of water ( 80 to 100 oz per day) along with o lower and possibly get off some of these BP Meds.

Thanks for your time and any recommendations are appreciated.

    ?

    Regards

    Bob

It is normal to have gout attacks when starting on Uloric or Alopurinol (eventually any uricosuric agent), my Dr. put me on colchicine (2 pills daily) for several months as a prophylactic and told me not to stop Alopurinol if I had an attack.

    ?

Losartan helps to control BP and also is an uricosuric agent.?

I would adivise not to drink a lot of water if you suffer from BP, high fluid intake increases BP.

Losartan stinks as a BP med but it is a fairly good uricosuric. A good combo, researched by some Japanese scientists is LASIX (furosemide diuretic) followed a couple hours later by losartan.

The combo gives the best urate lowering of any BP?regimen and gives very good BP control, especially if you are in the minority, volume-driven, salt-sensitive, hypertensives.

    ?

Psst, If you are controlling your BP down to 110, you are taking too many drugs.

    ?

Give a try to 40 mg. Lasix followed by 50 or 100 mg. losartan 3 hours later and see if it gives you good enough BP control. If it works, it really is the best regimen for gouties.

If it doesn't control well enough…we'll find something that does.

Stay away from anything with a thiazide diuretic.
