To help other members avoid the fog that I had to go through last week after I took an anti biotic that interacted with my Colchicine, I thought I'd post a list (given to me by my local pharmcist) of drugs that could negatively interact with Colchicine. I'm not sure how complete the list is, but it's what was given to me. Hope it helps!

Some people (Never Mix Biaxin (Clarithromycin) And Colchicine) hold a different view, but I suppose it depends how serious you view death.
Curiously, the search results that I mention on that page now fail to produce the original warning from July 2006. A deeper search reveals “Information for Healthcare Professionals: New Safety Information for Colchicine (marketed as Colcrys)”, issued 30 July 2009 which states:
During the drug application review, FDA identified two previously uncharacterized safety concerns associated with the use of colchicine (marketed as Colcrys).
First, FDA analyzed safety data for colchicine from adverse events reported to the Agency, the published literature, and company-sponsored pharmacokinetic and drug interaction studies. This analysis revealed cases of fatal colchicine toxicity reported in certain patients taking standard therapeutic doses of colchicine and concomitant medications that interact with colchicine, such as clarithromycin.
It seems that the FDA are now attributing the discovery of a fatal problem with Biaxin to those wonderful people who invented Killer Colcrys.
I wonder how much cash it took to bury the original report, or was it paid in holidays and other freebies.
Having experienced a murderous reaction between clarithromycin and LIPITOR (arguably the most prescribed drug on the planet for several years) I am convinced that clarithromycin should be BANNED!
Stains are now getting attention in the UK as to overall safety.
Mainly centred on the muscle wasting aspect which seriously impacts on kidneys -as well as lifestyle discomforts whilst taking them. Previously a wonder drug!
My neighbour stopped them a few months ago- I advised him not to drink on them at the time, [He was complaining of back pains] -but I don't know why he actually ceased them subsequently.
A new role for Colch- as marker for Statin intolerance?
Part of the reason that statins are no longer the WONDER DRUGS OF THE AGES is that they are losing patent protection: Zocor lost its patent and is now simvastatin at a tiny fraction of the cost and the best selling drug of all time, Lipitor loses patent in 2011 to become cheap and lowly atorvastatin.
Soon you'll hear your doctor saying ” Oh NOBODY uses statins anymore, they cause muscle aches …except for CRESTOR which will remain WONDERFUL for a few more years.”
Zyloprim was hailed as a wonder drug until it became allopurinol and then it got poo-poohed, along with gout in general. Look for more and more allopurinol bashing when doctors all get on the Uloric gravy train.
And the opposite is even funnier: “Oh nobody takes colchicine anymore” will become “Yes COLCRYS is a WONDER drug…an INSTANT cure for gout”
It would all be quite hysterical if it wasn't so sad.
Yes trev, I like the colchicine test for statin intolerance…perhaps throw in a macrolide antibiotic.
Don't worry about the patent loss. Someone will soon be bombarding the FDA with new test results (and who knows what else) to get restrictions back on the generics.
