We have just had a string of 100+ degree heat where i  live (California), and ive noticed pain to my left big toe and r big toe, as well as my wrist.  These have never been areas of extreme gout flares, but have had this “disomfort” in the past.  My main gout flares have been in the ankles, knees, and neck.  Ive been on 300 mg of allip for 2 months now, and really havent had any pain in the toes/wrist since.

Any thoughts on external heat resulting in flare ups?

it is possible but not directly due to heat, the dehydration may be the reason. By the way, I am also living in California in one of the more high temp areas in East bay..today it was 107 deg F around 4 pm…even at this time around 10 pm, it is above 80 deg F. I have kept my self fully hydrated with extra 1 ltr of water…And I have been out in heat few times including 3 miles walk at 7 am… and it was long day of 10 hrs working…
I have not noticed any thing to suggest any adverse impact on Gout…
I would suggest take more water during this week as we have another 2-3 days of near 90 deg F…

I agree- getting rid of urate needs a water balance that helps remove it from our bodies, even when on meds for it.

If you are de-hydrated in the least bit, this is badly compromised. The best way is to watch your output and makes sure is over 1.5 litres a day and stays clear – but it's a habit we have to re-learn as we age, due to the mechanism for thirst being lessened for each decade by about 10%.

It really is a habit to regain- but the thought of gout getting complicated is one that will encourage you, eventually.

well i understand the dehydration correlation, and i think i am more than hydrated (ive been peeing clear since my diagnosis due to the amount of water intake), but you never know.

Thanks, Ill keep the fluid intake in mind

Jon- it sounds like you have a grip on the fluid intake then!

Bear in mind that the thinking here from people who've done it is that AlloP can take 6months+ to get on top of the urate in the body.

This means aches and twinges like you have- but they should not last the length of time as before, in my exp.

Forbearance is something that every gouty finally gets… Cool

    Thanks trev,

I should be happy that i am finally back at work after 3 months….but i guess im just a little impatient.  Im still pretty far from having the physical confindence i had prior to the start of this mess (may 5th).  Im pretty lucky to be treating it with allip, but until its completely under control, ill always doubt the effectiveness of my therapy.

……I have started eating protien again (in moderation), so the re-introduction could also be a factor

It is the dehydration of Southern California heat combined with humidities approaching that of the MOON. Anyone from England or the Eastern United States cannot comprehend how bone dry the air is in your area. The Mohave is the same as the Sahara.

My last extended trip out West was in a broiling hot August and I had a sore throat every morning and my eyeballs dried out if I looked at anything for longer than 3 seconds. A trip to Disneyland at 109 degrees was like a visit to Hell. I don't know people stand the bone dryness? My only relief was in artuficially humidified places or swimming pools.

So keep drinking lots of cool clear water…at least until the Colorado dries up.

I bet, Mohave is really bad but Death Valley an hour drive away is worse. I happen to stop there for filling gas in the car at 10 pm in the night last month and it was 102 deg F. Outside was totally dry, no less than an oven.
5 minutes exposure and my head was spinning and throat paining.( I am sure the feel was 110 deg F plus).
I took 1 ltr water within next one hour to make sure I remain hydrated. I was a bit scared about a flare. Thankfully, it did not cause any problem or twinges.
