Was wondering if anyone had some info on glucosamine supplements in regard to helping to heal the damage done by years of gout.

I tried glucosamine-chondroitin (1500-1200 mg./day) for nearly a year to ameliorate spinal arthritis, knee and shoulder pain.

PURE HOKUM. From my personal experieince, the stuff is just another scam in an? endlessly?long line of arthritis scams.

A trip to Lourdes would likely work better.

The permanent damage is classed as osteoarthritis. Though there are doubters (and with so much money at stake, one would expect there to be), I'm afraid that there is Little Hope For Gout When It?s Gone Too Far.

Well, looks like another waster of time and money. ?The last thing I need to do is start wasting money on another pill, especially one that is tits-on-a-bull (worthless). ?It's hard to get a handle on what does any good; it seems for every positive report, there exists a negative.

I tried Glucosamine supplements years ago, to no avail.

I can't remember?now what it was- but?I think there was?a negative effect -and no positive, so I elected to not use it again.

If I had a dime for every “cure” for arthritis over the centuries, I'd be able to buy a new car.

You'd think any disease that was cured on a weekly basis would have had SOMETHING of?a r3easonable treatment ?come up if? only accidentally…but NO!

Imagine sitting in an abandoned uranium mine, festooned with coppper bracelets, eating pounds of supplements washed down with quarts of cider vinegar…and STILL aching.

AND….not able to have a double Wild Turkey. ?The Gods Of Karma are truly deranged. ?The greatest anesthesia ?known to humanity, denied to us. ??

(full disclosure: I was an avid daily user of glucosamine until this thread got me researching it)

    ??????

Wikipedia has an excellent summary of the FACTUAL studies done with glucosamine. It distills down to this:

    1. —There are studies by the NIH that it does NOT help alleviate pain with most common types of arthritis.
    2. —A major NIH study did prove it DOES help with osteoperosis (reducing cartilage turnover)
    3. —That same NIH study also showed it does help with osteoarthritis when taken in combination with other medications.
    4. —If you are diabetic or pre-diabetic glucosamine BEYOND THE RECCOMENDED DOSAGE interferes with Insulin absorption and increases resistance to Insulin. It contributes to the development of diabetes.

So the benefits are gradual and mostly relate to helping cartilage growth and retention. It does nothing for pain.

Since it is not considered a drug in the US and is not regulated, every form of glucosamine available provides far more than the reccomended doses. Those high doses interfere with the bodies abilty to process Insulin. I have been taking it for a couple years and was recently diagnosed as “pre-diabetic”. I know my elevated weight and diet are the primary factors ? but taking the supplement daily only increased my risk of developing full-blown diabetes. Europe regulates it as a drug for this reason.

If you decide to take the supplement, get a smaller dose tablet or consider splitting the pills in half or thirds.

    ?

Like everything else in the world?too much of a good thing is always bad for you.
